INDUSTRIAL DATA DIODE / OT TO IT

Bring factory insight out.
Keep control local.

An industrial data diode can share operational information with IT systems while removing the return communication path through that link. Explore where this fits your plant and what a successful integration needs.

No return control path through this diode

In plain language

OT means operational technology: systems that monitor or control physical equipment. ICS means industrial control systems. Connecting these systems to business reporting creates useful visibility, but the required direction must be deliberate.

UNDERSTAND THE REQUIREMENT

Visibility should not quietly become remote control.

A maintenance team may need machine health readings while finance needs production totals. Neither task necessarily requires a command path back to the equipment. An outward-facing diode can support that separation when the applications and gateway connectors are compatible.

01

Maintenance reporting

Export temperature, vibration or operating-hour readings for analysis. Agree the update rate and what happens when readings become stale.

02

Historian replication

Replicate selected historical values to a reporting environment. Confirm timestamps, tag mapping and handling of missed intervals.

03

Production visibility

Share counts, quality events or shift summaries with business systems without giving the reporting connection a return control path.

Where it fits

A candidate when the business needs observation or replication. If the same application must send commands back, that requirement needs a separate architecture assessment.

FOR TECHNICAL TEAMS

Four checks before
you choose a design.

Bring these questions to the architecture discussion. A product’s supported connectors and tested configuration matter.

01

Application behaviour

List actual applications and versions. Polling, subscriptions and authentication can depend on replies; a protocol name alone does not prove compatibility.

02

Information ownership

Decide which tags, events or files may leave. Direction enforcement does not determine whether content is appropriate to share.

03

Operational recovery

Agree buffering, loss indicators, duplicate handling and recovery after a link or destination failure.

04

Other connections

Review maintenance and remote-access paths separately. The diode protects its own path, not every route into the plant.

TURN ASSUMPTIONS INTO EVIDENCE

What should your POC test?

Use representative tags and production rates, then interrupt the link and receiving application. Compare timestamps and values, measure latency and confirm that stale readings are clearly identified.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Before you
take the next step.

Does it replace an industrial firewall?

Not necessarily. A diode addresses direction at a specific boundary. Firewalls, segmentation, endpoint controls and secure administration can still be needed elsewhere.

Can OPC UA or MQTT work across it?

A suitable gateway may support these through connectors or replication. Confirm the exact communication model and delivery behaviour rather than assuming an ordinary session crosses unchanged.

Can the IT dashboard acknowledge receipt?

It cannot acknowledge back through an outward-only diode. Local proxy acknowledgements and end-to-end delivery evidence are different things.
